Garland 5th, Owens 13th After Day 1 At U20 Worlds

Kyle Garland sits in fifth, while Ayden Owens, the victim of a DQ in the 400 meters, is 13th after the first day of competition in the decathlon at the IAAF World U20 Championships in Tampere, Finland.

Both Garland and Owens were solid through four events, and Owens dropped a personal best in the 400 meters before later being disqualified, meaning he received zero points from that event.

To start the say off in the 100 meters, Owens dropped a quick 10.67 (the second fastest time). Garland went 10.97 for sixth. In the long jump, Owens posted another strong result of 6.94 meters (22-09.25) for sixth, while Garland jumped 21-00 for 14th.

Next up was the shot put, where Garland got cooking. The Germantown Academy graduate threw 15.11 meters (49-07) for second, while 13.71 meters (44-11.75) for seventh. In the high jump, Garland was fourth with a solid clearance of 2.01 meter (6-07). Owens cleared 1.92 meters (6-03.5) for tenth. Owens was sixth and Garland sat in seventh heading into the final event of the first day.

In the 400 meters, Garland ran 50.59 for fifth in his heat and eventually ninth overall. Owens blasted a big PR of 48.70 in the second heat, according to the initial live results. But it was later determined that Owens was disqualified (we're working to find out exactly why!)

Owens, who is competing for Puerto Rico, would be placed in fourth position through five events with 4,052 points without the DQ. Instead, he'll enter day two in 13th place after not earning any points from the 400.

After a strong finish to the day, Garland is in fifth with 3,939 points. Australian Ashley Mooney has a commanding lead on the rest of the field with 4,319 points after day one.

In the women's javelin, Maura Fiamoncini, a Mount Carmel graduate and current Bucknell University athlete, placed 14th overall in the qualification round. Fiamoncini threw 48.91 meters (160-05), two spots off a spot in the finals.
